Elm Tree Farm’s time-honored philosophy is simple: “Solid from the ground up.”
Founded in 1989 by Jody Huckabay and his father, the late Dr. Jackie Huckabay, with “one barn, two fields, three paddocks, and a wheel barrow,” Elm Tree Farm, is today wholly owned by Jody and Michelle Huckabay. It is a thriving first-class Thoroughbred breeding, sales, and breaking operation—and one of Central Kentucky's most picturesque and productive horse and cattle farms.
Nestled in historic Bourbon County in the heart of the famed calcium-rich Bluegrass region, Elm Tree Farm is located minutes from nearby Paris, Kentucky, and 20 minutes from Lexington, “Horse Capital of the World,” and the renowned Kentucky Horse Park, legendary Keeneland Race Course, Bluegrass Airport, and major veterinary clinics.
“We’re very proud of what we do and what we have. The ground here is as good as anything in the world—whether you’re raising horses or livestock or anything else.”
--Jody Huckabay, Owner Elm Tree Farm
The elm trees that adorn Elm Tree Farm’s 600 rolling acres, pay homage not only to the farm’s name but also to Elmwood Farms Plantation in Harmon, Louisiana, once owned by Jody Huckabay’s grandfather, Dr. L.S. Huckabay.
The land that Elm Tree Farm sits upon is not only rich and remarkable but also famous in its own right. A line of trees found on Elm Tree Farm serves as a notable marker for the railroad that once cut across the landscape, serving the former village of Elizabeth Station. The Frankfort and Cincinnati Railroad line ran from Frankfort to Paris, where it connected with the mainline of the Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific Railroad, nicknamed “The Whiskey Route” because of the number of world-famous Kentucky Bourbon distilleries it served.
Another noteworthy section of Elm Tree Farm was once home to “Clark’s Station,” built in 1784 by Dr. Robert Clark, a lieutenant in the Revolutionary War. Clearly, the past is always present at Elm Tree Farm and the future has never been brighter.
With eight barns, 125 stalls, a complete and up-to-date inventory of modern farm equipment, state-of-the-art facilities and an attentive, dedicated, and caring staff of fifteen knowledgeable hands-on professionals, Elm Tree Farm has provided breeding, sales preparation and representation, and other specialized services to the industry for more than two decades; serving dozens of valued and discerning clients and hundreds of well cared for horses. The result: A long (and growing) list of satisfied clients that wouldn’t trust anyone else with their horses.
We offer a wide range of services to maximize the potential of your equine portfolio including sales preparation, consignment, mating recommendations, seasons, shares, and purchasing.
Farm owner Jody Huckabay sums up Elm Tree’s day-to-day operation best, “Every animal we care for is treated as if we own it—every day—not just some days. It’s about the land, the soil, and the follow-through.”
